Course summary

This programme includes a wide range of disciplines that address the processes of life, spanning from the simplest microbial cells to the highly complex living forms, and their interdependencies with each other. Through this programme, students will acquire fundamental knowledge and practical skills in molecular and cellular biology, microbiology, biochemistry and plant biology. It also provides opportunities for students to engage in diverse and interdisciplinary research areas, ranging from molecular biology, with its potential to revolutionize medicine and agriculture, to ecology, with its applications for sustainable management of the environment. It is aspired that these research fields will satisfy and meet future challenges in improving the quality of human life as well as sustaining the habitats and biodiversity. Rapid growth of biotechnology locally and internationally promises growing and continuous job opportunities for biological science graduates. Generally, graduates of this programme may hold various positions in government and non-government sectors under the fields of Biosciences and Bioengineering such as: Agrochemicals; Bioinformatics and Information Technology; Fermentation and Enzyme Technology; Genomics and Proteomics; Environmental Biotechnology; Industrial Microbiology; Nano-Biotechnology; Mass Communication; Journalism; Education.

Entry Requirements

Students must have pass with minimum grade of B-(CGPA 2.67) in Biology; pass at least with grade C+ (CGPA 2.33) in any two subjects: physics, chemistry, mathematics (additional maths, advance additional maths); pass at least with distinction in mathematics at the level of SPM/STPM. Diploma holders must have holder from UTM or any other institution certified by Malaysian government and related; pass with minimum CGPA of 2.5; other equivalent qualification with minimum CGPA 2.5; candidates with CGPA less than 2.5 with at least 2 years of working experience in related field.

"Hands-on" Experience
Biology courses are tailored so you get valuable hands-on experience. Students have participated in such experiences as: taking an inventory of all birds on-campus, dissecting various types of animals, and surveying fields to discover the correlation between woodchucks and kudzu.

Independent research is highly encouraged, and a number of current students and alumni have become published researchers in their field of study.

Biology

What does a biologist do? Someone working in biology as a scientist may work with plants or animals. Someone in the field may study extinct organisms, work as a biochemist, a marine biologist, a geneticist, or a cell biologist.

Biology is a science focused on the study of life. It is one of the largest fields in the area of science, along with chemistry and physics.

Biology, at its highest level, is broken down according to whatever type of organism is being studied, such as the protection of ecologies, botany, or the study of plants; zoology, or the study of animals; agriculture, the study of ecosystems, and microbiology, which includes the study of microorganisms.

A zoologist might study in a more specific field, such as the study of fish, or some other creature. A zoologist studies animals, their diseases, behavior, and development. Zoologists may make certain animals are well provided for. Some zoologists work at the zoo.

An agricultural biologist might ensure that a specific business meets industry standards, that products meet standards before being exported, ensure that pesticides are stored safely, and register pest control operators. Someone in the field may guarantee pests won’t be introduced into an area, remove pest plants, advise those working in the agriculture on how to remove pests, inspect nurseries to be certain they meet standards, and investigate complaints related to pests, pesticides, and violations of local, state or federal laws.

Someone wanting to become a biologist would need at least a Bachelor of Science in Biology for an entry level position. Courses of study required might include biology, computers, math, chemistry, physics, engineering, marine biology, and environmental science. Those who want to work in product development, management, applied research, or as a professor at the community college level need a Master of Science in Biology. Those who want to teach or do research at a university need a Ph.D. in Biology.

What is Biotech?

Science and Biotech: Where to Start

With so many people interested in the biotech industry, many people are wandering where to start. For those looking for the most economical way to break into the sector, community colleges are the way to go. Community colleges all over the nation have began to set up programs for biotech due to the demand in workers, and this is the fastest and cheapest way for one to get his or her foot in the door. The biotech program begins with general science and biology courses. Ones seeking an associate level degree should be prepared to take a chemical survey course, micro-biology, biology I & II, and possibly physics as their science core. Along with those courses, the student will also embark on laboratory courses where he or she will learn proper procedures for lab safety, the cultivation of samples, and other information related to biotechnology. Once completed, the student will graduate with an associate degree that will allow him or her to apply for lab assistant jobs. However, if one wishes to climb the biotech ladder, he or she will need a four year degree in biotechnology, which will allow that student to by-pass traditional assistant jobs and go on to actual research based positions.

Mock Interview


Assalamua'alaikum, wahai sahabat-sahabat yang dikasihi..

Tanggal 28 Julai 2011 ni, ana akan menghadiri Mock Interview yang dianjurkan pihak maktab.. Agak nervous sebab.. Umm.., rasenye siape yang tak kisah atau rase biasa-biasa je kalau dia nak di-interview?? macam tulah analoginya..

Before that, maybe there's people don't know about this 'Mock Interview'. So, for this post, i would like to share with you all about the matter.. These are the result of my research..

Mock Interviews

Successful interviewing requires preparation and practice. After you do your research, it is helpful to practice answering questions so that during the actual interview, you can remain focused on your connection with the interviewer. See the Interview Questions section for commonly asked questions.

The most effective way to practice is to say the answers out loud; rehearsing in your head does not count as practice. You can read the questions to yourself and answer them aloud, you can create flash cards with questions and practice with a group of friends, or you can arrange for a mock interview.

Structure
A mock interview is structured like an actual interview so you need to be properly dressed and fully prepared. Bring a copy of your resume, and the job description if there is a specific position for which you would like to apply. Even for a phone mock interview, you should dress professionally and sit at a desk, as this helps to project a professional attitude and tone of voice. The usual format in a traditional 30 minute mock interview is 15-20 minutes of questions and 10-15 minutes of review.

Arranging for a mock interview
  • On-campus mock interviews tend to focus on general interview skills.
    1. A student can schedule a mock interview with a CWS counselor at any time throughout the year by calling our main number at ext. 2352. Click here for the Mock Interview Form.

    2. Once each semester, the CWS brings in local alumnae as volunteers to provide mock interviews. Check the CWS calendar in MyCWS and flyers for dates.
  • Off-campus or field-specific mock interviews:
    1. Many alumnae in the W Network have volunteered to provide mock interviews. Search for them by highlighting "Mock interviews" under "Areas of Involvement" in the "Networking Preferences" section. Contact them directly (in accordance with CWS W Network Etiquette) to arrange for the mock interview.
